Spicy Fried Plantain

Spicy plantains are an easy recipe for fried ripe plantains with a sweet and fiery kick. A flavorful twist on this popular Caribbean and African side dish made with a mix of pantry spices.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 ripe plantains
  • 1 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Method
 

  1. Cut off the ends of the plantains and peel the skin.
  2. Slice into rounds or chunks—avoid slicing too thin.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the ginger powder, onion powder, sugar, and chili powder.
  4. Place plantain slices in a container and toss with the spice mix until evenly coated.
  5. Sprinkle salt over the coated plantains and mix again.
  6. Let the plantains sit for 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  7. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  8. Fry plantain slices in batches until golden brown and crisp on the outside.
  9. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

Oven Method:
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Arrange coated plantain slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp.
